The 16th Annual National Board Certified Teachers’ Pinning Ceremony

Made with Padlet

On Tuesday, March 14, 2023, Prince George’s County Public Schools held its 16th  Annual National Board Certificated Teachers’ Pinning Ceremony. This event acknowledged educators who achieved National Board Certification in December 2022. During the ceremony, 87 educators received their NBCT lapel pins. The pinning was the first for 46 of these educators; for the other 41, this was their second pinning ceremony. Everyone was excited to be in the room where the pinning was happening, no matter the number of pins.

This event was Prince George’s County Public Schools’ first in-person pinning ceremony in three years, and there was an incredible turnout to honor the 87 new and renewing NBCTs. As one of the Mistresses of Ceremonies, I had the opportunity to congratulate not only our honorees but enjoy welcoming remarks from Judy Mickens-Murray, Chair of the PGCPS Board of Education, Dr. Kristi Baldwin, Chief Human Resources Officer of PGCPs Office of Professional Learning and Leadership, and virtual greetings from our own Dr. Peggy Brookins, President and CEO of National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

Many honorees invited their families and friends to help them celebrate. Others were there with their mentors, NBCTs, that helped them with the process. Two of my mentee received their pins, making the day even more special.

Whether the pinning celebration is a virtue or in person, I have attended every ceremony since 2011, when I received my first pin. That celebration was in person, and my family supported me. My mentor was present, and we had a great time. My next pinning ceremony was during the pandemic, and support was also present.

Earning an NBCT Pin is no easy feat and is worthy of celebration. Here is hoping that all NBCTs across the county have an opportunity to celebrate their accomplishment with a pin or two.
