Perseverance Pays Off: My Journey to National Board Certification
In 2009, I embarked on a challenging and ambitious journey to pursue National Board Certification, a path I had never even heard of until I came across a flier offering support in my school district. I wholeheartedly committed to the project because I was excited about the possibility of earning this prestigious certification and because my district offered financial incentives and guidance. Back then, the certification process required candidates to complete six assessment center activities and four portfolio entries within a single school year, spanning from August to March. It was undeniably a formidable task, but I held unwavering confidence in my teaching abilities and dedicated myself wholeheartedly to achieving this esteemed credential.
Despite my hard work, my initial attempt was disappointing, as I missed certification by four points. I was upset when I did not see fireworks (if you achieve certification, you see fireworks when you open the score report) and fell short on my first attempt. However, instead of succumbing to disappointment, I viewed this setback as an opportunity for growth. I understood that setbacks are not failures but rather stepping stones towards success. My commitment to my students, my profession, and my own growth as an educator motivated me to persist despite the initial setback. This determination to bounce back and keep going is the first invaluable lesson we can learn from my story—not yet does not mean never.
One of the primary reasons I decided to continue my journey toward National Board Certification was my deep-rooted belief in the transformative power of education. I recognized that the certification process wasn't just about personal recognition and becoming a better teacher for my students. This intrinsic motivation fueled my perseverance.
