Conference on Racial and Social Justice 2023 The Freedom to Learn

For educators, administrators, and those interested in advancing equity and diversity in education, attending the 2023 National Education Association (NEA) Conference on Racial and Social Justice (CRSJ) is an excellent opportunity to learn and connect. This conference occurs a few days before the NEA’s Annual Meeting and Representative Assembly each year. During the Representative, educators from across the county debated essential issues that impact public education and set NEA policies and activities for the year. CRSJ has become an extension of the Representative Assembly because NEA sponsors both events.

As an elected delegate for the Representative Assembly, voted on by colleagues from my school system, I planned to go to Florida for NEA. I decided to participate in CRSJ, and I am glad I did. Through my participation in workshops, listening to lectures, and panel discussions, I gained insight into various ways individuals and groups are actively working to develop inclusive and equitable learning environments for all students.

The conference offered participants the opportunity to increase cultural sensitivity and awareness. Finding Fellowship and Building Community, a documentary by Jason Green, was one of my favorite sessions. This documentary examines the merger of three racially segregated churches in 1968 in Quince Orchard, Maryland, which is located near my home. I found the documentary to be profoundly interesting. I highly recommend watching it on PBIS. Finding Fellowship and Building Community showcases how diverse communities can unite for a common cause: to save their churches.

Another favorite was about creating an Anti-Racism Taskforce at the local level. The session aimed to empower attendees to become change agents in their schools and communities to fight against structural injustice and discrimination. The presenters discussed advocating for policy changes to advance equity and social justice in educational practices. This session was definitely in line with the message of the conference.

The 2023 NEA Conference on Racial and Social Justice offered an opportunity to network with educators, specialists, and activists, fostering collaborations and sharing resources to advance racial and social justice projects. I gained valuable information, contacts, and inspiration to make a difference in their educational communities. I’ll definitely go again next year.
